Learning to Communicate

Public speaking, debates, and languages are key tools that help children develop strong communication skills.

From an early age, our children are encouraged to express their ideas with confidence, share their views of the world around them, and communicate naturally with others. In the Early Years, this takes place through class circle time, where every child is given the opportunity to speak freely and in their own way. These daily moments help children learn to share their thoughts while developing the ability to listen respectfully to others.

As they grow, children gradually develop active listening skills, critical thinking, and the ability to construct well-reasoned arguments. They learn to approach new ideas with an open mind while thinking independently and making informed judgements. An essential part of this process is learning to distinguish between a person and their ideas, fostering mutual respect and meaningful dialogue.

Through activities such as drama, public speaking, and debate—including participation in debate competitions such as Dixit for older students—we encourage pupils to organise and present persuasive arguments with confidence, always respecting different viewpoints rather than imposing their own.

Drama is one of the most popular activities at La Farga and has been offered as an elective subject in Year 10 (4th ESO) for more than 21 years. Through drama, students develop emotional awareness, verbal and non-verbal communication skills, and confidence in public speaking. As they work together to create and perform an original play, they acquire a wide range of personal and social skills that are difficult to develop through other learning experiences. The course culminates in public performances at the Sant Cugat Theatre-Auditorium.

Of course, strong communication skills are built on a solid command of language. La Farga's language programme is based on a multilingual approach that aims to develop each student's overall linguistic competence. The programme is founded on the following principles:

Catalan is the school's main language of instruction and is used as the primary language for both oral and written communication throughout school life.

Alongside Catalan, Spanish and English are integral parts of everyday learning and school life.

Our school is proudly multilingual. Students learn and use Catalan, Spanish, and English throughout their education, while French is offered as a fourth language during Secondary Education.

English plays a particularly important role in our curriculum. From an early age, children take part in a wide range of activities in English, enabling them to develop confidence and fluency naturally. Through our CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) programme, a variety of curriculum subjects are taught in English across Primary, Secondary, and Sixth Form, including Science, Arts and Crafts, and Physical Education. Pupils also study STEM and Robotics in English. In Secondary Education, Social Sciences is taught in English, while in Sixth Form students continue to strengthen their language skills through subjects such as Economics and Entrepreneurship.

Students in Year 6 of Primary and Year 7 (1st ESO) also have the opportunity to spend one school term in Ireland, living with a host family while continuing their education at a school in Dublin. This unique immersion experience enables them to make significant progress in their English language skills while gaining confidence, independence, and a deeper understanding of another culture.
